Posted Date: 5/21/25 (8:00 PM)

Dear Families,
As we head into summer break, we know how important it is to keep young minds active so students return to school ready to learn. Here are some simple, free, and low-prep activities your child can do to keep up their math and reading skills while still enjoying the break!

📚 Reading Practice Ideas

  1. Use the Public Library’s Summer Reading Program
Cabarrus County Library has a free summer reading program with incentives and events. Let your child choose books that interest them!
  2. 30 Minutes a Day Reading Time
Whether it's comic books, graphic novels, recipes, or bedtime stories, reading anything every day builds fluency and vocabulary.
  3. Listen to Free Audiobooks
Use apps like Libby or Storyline Online for free audiobooks read by celebrities. Great for car rides or quiet time!
  4. Start a Book-Log or Reading Journal
Have your child write a sentence or draw a picture about what they read each day. This encourages comprehension and writing.
  5. Word Scavenger Hunt
Choose a theme or letter of the day and have your child find and read things around the house or neighborhood that match it!

Math Practice Ideas

  1. Practice Math Facts with Card or Dice Games
Use a regular deck of cards to play addition or multiplication war, or roll dice and add/subtract/multiply the numbers.
  2. Cooking = Math Practice
Involve your child in measuring, doubling recipes, or cutting food into fractions—fun and delicious math!
  3. IXL (Free Skill Previews)
While full access requires a subscription, IXL.com allows free daily practice on grade-specific math skills.
  4. Math in the Real World
Let your child help with budgeting, estimating costs at the store, or calculating change—everyday math in action!
  5. Use Free Online Practice Sites
Try sites like Khan Academy for free, grade-level lessons and activities.
Encouraging just 15–30 minutes a day of reading or math can make a big difference by the time school starts again. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s learning—even during summer!

Wishing you a safe, restful, and fun-filled break!
